Your First Visit – Preparing to See a Physical Therapist

If you have never been to physical therapy before, you may have some questions about what to expect on your first visit. We want to take a moment to set your mind at ease and help you to prepare for your first time in the office.

Preparing for Your First Physical Therapy Appointment

Clinics differ to a great degree, but there are a few things you should always do when getting ready for your first appointment:

  • Check your insurance. Before you visit, you should make sure that the clinic accepts your insurance and that your insurance covers the type of treatment you will be receiving.
  • Make a Symptoms List. List your pain symptoms, starting with the problem that is causing you the worst issues. What makes the pain better or worse? How long have the symptoms persisted?
  • Prepare Your Medical History – Leaving out key elements from one’s medical history may limit the effectiveness of care, so it is important to think about your medical history in advance rather than trying to remember everything in the waiting room or in the office. Important things to have prepared include medications you take, medical conditions you have, past and recent injuries, and any contact info for other healthcare professionals you want your physical therapist to consult with.
  • Ask Questions. You may want to prepare a list of questions that you have so you don’t forget to ask. This will help you to make the best use of your appointment.
